We have several Latin-American belly dancers in Australia and they’re some of my personal favourites, because of their joyful, natural sense of rhythm. Melika is one of them – of Lebanese descent, but born in Mexico City.
Melika is teaching at the Middle Eastern Dance Centre in Newtown.
Interview with Sydney Belly Dancer Melika
How did you get started with belly dancing? I was given a bellydancing CD as a gift. As soon as I heard the first track, it was as if I was under a beautiful, weird spell that kept me moving and all of the sudden I was shimmying! My body knew the rhythm; from that moment I started doing research about this magical dance and got enrolled in a class in Mexico City.
What is your favourite belly dancing style and/or prop? Darbuka Solos, Fan Veils and Zills
Who or what has had the greatest influence on your belly dance style? Th biggest influence would have to be all talented dancers world wide – but mostly my inner bellydancer! Also the golden age of Bellydance.
What advice would you offer an aspiring belly dancer? Listen to the music and feel the rhythm. Dance as if you were dancing on an empty room full of yourself ( Melika: my motto of life) *
