Veils

When choosing a veil for belly dancing, do check the measurements before you buy. Many fashion veils are not long enough to dance with - and at the other extreme, professional belly dance veils may trip you up, if you're not very tall.

The best way to measure is to take a long piece of material and drape it over your shoulders. Stand with your arms by your sides and let the material hang down over them, to the floor. Get someone to mark or pin the piece of material about 30cm beyond your fingertips on either side. Now take the material off your shoulders, measure from pin to pin - and that's how long your veil should be. It's OK if it's a little longer, but it shouldn't be any shorter as it will limit what you can do with it while you dance.

Chiffon is a good choice for the beginner. Organza looks great but can be too stiff. Silk is gorgeous but expensive, and can be hard to keep aloft unless you're an experienced belly dancer.
