Debra is probably best known to Australian belly dancers as the face behind the Tribal and Trance Festival. The workshops are always excellent – Tribal dancers are noted for their strong technique, and many of the workshops have something to offer all bellydancers, not just Tribal dancers.
Here’s the “Taster” concert from the last Festival to whet your appetite:
Of course, Debra is also a tribal bellydancer in her own right – here she is as half of Las Musas with Danielle Sansom:
Belly Dance Oz interview with Debra Napier
How did you get started with belly dancing?
A friend asked if I would do a bellydance class with her and I agreed to go for some fun. I was immediately hooked! Another friend introduced me to Tribal Style videos and the rest is history.
What is your favourite belly dancing style and/or prop?
Tribal style is my passion. I really love incorporating props like fan veils, flag poi and fire toys. Fire poi is my favourite.
Who or what has had the greatest influence on your belly dance style?
Carolena Nericcio of Fat Chance Belly Dance created Tribal Style. Each move is so detailed and nuanced and a great challenge to learn.
What advice would you offer an aspiring belly dancer?
Work really hard on your technique but make sure to nurture your love and joy for the dance.
